A very real concern for a
lot of people is the inability to conceive a baby. The words
“infertility” or “unexplained infertility” are now
unfortunately very commonly used. Over the past years there
has been a dramatic increase in the use of Assisted
Reproductive Technologies (ART) such as IVF. It is now said
that a staggering 1 in 20 babies born in Australia are a
result of IVF, with around 40,000 cycles of IVF beginning
each year. The ever increasing cost of ART both physically
and emotionally is not something to be taken lightly.
Despite the progress that has been made in the medical
treatment of “infertility” the success rate of those who
undergo high-tech procedures is still only around 25%.
What has happened? How has conception, which is a natural,
normal event for healthy men and women been transformed from
something that “just happened” to an event that is thwart
with hurdles and medical intervention?
It’s important to understand that conception is a mind /
body process, and that the state of a person’s mind can
affect their chances of conceiving the baby that they so
much desire. Stress and a lack of confidence tend to be the
biggest factors that cause this mind / body connection to go
astray. The affects of stress can wreak havoc on a woman’s
menstrual cycle, and consequently, her fertility. It has
been estimated that 5% of all women at any given time have
stopped menstruating because of stress. Many others have
irregular periods. Even if your menstrual cycle is always
consistent stress can still have detrimental effects.
Cortisol and other hormones can prevent the implantation of
fertilised eggs. Men don’t get away with it either. A
stressed man can reduce sperm count or the quality of their
sperm.
With more and more women in highly demanding and stressful
jobs, it’s little wonder that sometimes conception does not
take place immediately. Many couples have simply lost faith
in the natural process of conception and are sure that
medical assistance is the answer for them. While sometimes
there are true physiological reasons for infertility, the
mind / body connection is often overlooked – especially when
it comes to “unexplained infertility”.
To boost the success rate of ART or have the very best
chance of conception, people are now utilising complementary
treatments such as acupuncture, herbal remedies, homeopathic
medicine, chiropractic and mind / body approaches. One of
the most powerful of these is Hypnotherapy. Hypnosis goes
beyond simple guided imagery ,and not only increases the
odds of conception but also enhances overall health and
wellbeing. Using Hypnotherapy with fertility is fast
becoming recognised as successful way of increasing the rate
of conception.
Studies have shown that 55% of previously “infertile” women
conceived after regularly utilising mind / body techniques.
This was compared to only 20% of women who did not.
